Introducing..... Shay!

I am pleases to introduce to you Shay S.

I made a connection with Shay through a friend from high school. Shay is currently in a country in Africa, Mozambique.  She studied psychology and child development at University of Idaho.

She worked in a PreK program where she practiced English with her students and families. She got into the Peace Corp soon after.

We were discussing poverty and she was telling me that her students asked if there were poor people in the United States. ...speaks to our image in other countries...she explained to them there are poor people in the U.S. but there are programs in place to help them out.

As simple a thought as it is - I didn't know there not such programs in other places. But I guess, if the government is poor they can't afford to help their people. That sucks. It makes me realize that even though I hear so much complaining about the state of the country, we really are doing better than alot of places.

  1. Koni,
I am glad that you made a connection outside the U.S. I hope that Shay can give new insights to what is happening with young children in Africa. I look forward to learn more from her through you.

  2. Koni,

I am glad that you made a connection. It seems like Shay is going to be able to provide you with the information on children in Africa. I like her statement about her children asking if there were poor people in the US, it amazes me how things are the same in other countries. I look forward to hearing more from you and Shay.

  3. Great that you made a connection. It's quite amazing when you start researching other countries that there are not systems in place to support the poor. While I recognize that our own system needs improvement it is the attempt of our officials to meet the needs of families and children. Having lived in Mexico, I have seen first hand a country that doesn't support the poor.

  4. We really are doing better compared to some other countries. In Africa, in my opinion poverty speaks on a whole different level. I think what Shay is doing over there is WONDERFUL and she deserves a world of praise. There is so much going on over there, I would be intimadated if asked to go over there. The stories you hear, and the articles you read can truly make u label those families in Africa.
